What Did We Do for Earth Month 2024?

The Cleanup Club’s event at Lake Erie (also pictured - Claire Malher of 86 Plastic), April 2024

April is always our favorite month.

Yes, it is Earth Month, but it’s also the start of more shining sun, the coming of spring, and where I come out of hibernation. Michigan weather really only becomes lovely starting in April, which is where the excitement really picks up, that includes more community gatherings.

Since it is Earth Month, there are some really fun events that organizations and small businesses host.

While we celebrate Earth Month every month, we wanted to highlight some of the events that we were a part of that are a part of my everyday life, but also that were special for the month as well.

Launched the Green Beauty Community Guidebook

Since The Green Beauty Community is our sister company, we were excited to work alongside GBC and Pivot Point to launch The Green Beauty Community Guidebook, a free educational source to bring a solid foundation for conversation about sustainability in the beauty industry. You can download it here and learn more about it here.

Clothing Swap at 86 Plastic

I needed nicer clothing for some networking events coming up so it was really lucky for me that 86 Plastic was hosting a clothing swap! People bring their unwanted clothes and switch for pieces that they do want from others. It’s free, easy, and helps with unnecessary fashion waste.

Beach Cleanup with The Cleanup Club

My first clean up of the season! The Cleanup Club is a non-profit organization that helps clean the great lakes, streets, neighborhoods, and cities of Michigan. It was a perfect first event for Lake Erie of the season, when it tends to have a lot of trash build up from over the cooler months.

Donated 56 Pew Chairs to ReStore (Habitat for Humanity)

I’ve been supporting First United Methodist Church with their sustainability initiatives for the last few years. They were welcoming new pew chairs for their Chapel for the first time in 30 years and needed to find a solution for their old ones. We have a Habitat for Humanity ReStore down the road and were able to donate all 56 chairs there for a new home!

Apart of the Earth Month Community Meetup for The Green Beauty Community

Starting off Earth Month right with a community meetup with The Green Beauty Community! We all discussed what we were doing for Earth Month as a beauty professional as well as had a great opportunity to bounce ideas off of one another and to learn from each other. I wrote an article about it on the Green Beauty Community’s website if you would like to learn more.

Was a Guest on Artist On Go’s Sustainability Webinar

To celebrate Artist On Go’s partnership with Green Beauty Community, I helped host a webinar on Sustainability in the Beauty Industry alongside ARTIST ON GO and VISH plus easy, actionable steps you can take in your own salon.

Attended America’s Beauty Show on Earth Day

I was lucky to attend America’s Beauty Show with the founder, Daniel Johnson, of The Green Beauty Community to raise the conversation about what can be done about sustainability in salons and how this platform mends the gaps. We networked, fundraised, and met others in the industry that want to mend these gaps as well.

The last few years I’ve burned myself out every April to do the most I can for Earth Month, this year was easily going to be the same because it’s so easy (even for an environmental company) to get sucked into.

I remembered that because I do celebrate the earth every day, I didn’t need to burn myself to keep the flame of hope alive for a better planet. I am hoping because I do live this way, others will also want to do the same - beyond April.
